A gorgeous and lyrical story about Pura Belpré, a Puerto Rican librarian who changed the world. Belpré, the first Latina New York City librarian, born in 1899, seeded the folktales of her native Puerto Rico in her new home. As a library assistant, Belpré made puppets to enhance her storytelling performances, which introduced the elegant cockroach Martina, the dashing mouse Pérez, and other beloved characters from Puerto Rican folklore, after which the tales were published for wider distribution.
